VDP Training at Dentistry For All

Trainer - Nicholas Taylor, BDS

Picture of Nicholas Taylor, BDS

I qualified at Guy’s Hospital in 1978, where I completed a House job and then moved to an Associate position in Kendal.  I purchased this practice in 1981 with my wife. Ian Redfearn came into partnership in 2003.  I have held two posts as a clinical assistant in Oral Surgery and am currently a Postgraduate Tutor and Dental Representative on the local Primary Care Trust Professional Executive Committee.  I am committed to continued professional development and completed a DPDS in summer 2005.

I have been involved with ‘Mercy Ships’ dental outreaches in West Africa since 1994.  I am a member of the BDA, FGDP, SAAD and the Christian Dental Fellowship.  The practice has clinical placements for dental therapy students training with Liverpool University for which I am an Honorary Tutor.

Interests include mountaineering, kayaking and family!

The Practice

The Practice has been established since the turn of the century and been with the current owners since 1981.  We are situated 5 minutes from the centre of town on a main road, in an old mill owner’s house at the corner of two terraces.  It is modernised throughout including full computerisation with EDI link, RA in all surgeries, OPT and a central sterilisation system.

We have been an approved training practice for ten years and currently have six dentists (two of whom are my previous VDP’s), a practice manageress, two hygienists and experienced qualified supporting staff.

We offer a wide range of high quality NHS and private treatment including oral surgery and orthodontics.

We have helped pioneer the introduction of clinical governance systems in general practice and were among the first practices in the country to gain both the BDA “Good Practice” and “Investors in People” awards.  We have featured in a number of publications including the BDJ and BDA News.

The management of the practice involves all the dentists and practice manager, centred for the staff on a monthly practice meeting.  We have regular social events.

The Area

Nelson is an old mill town under the shadow of Pendle Hill from which the borough takes its name. In the last 15 years the town has diversified its commercial & industrial base, due to excellent links to the National motorway network by the M65.

By car Manchester is 40 minutes, the Yorkshire Dales 20 minutes and the Lake District one hour.

The local hospital, Burnley General, has a helpful Oral Surgery and Orthodontic Department and a modern Postgraduate department providing lecture theatres, a library and CAL facilities. The BDA are very active in the area.

Pendle local facilities include several swimming pools, running track, cricket and football grounds, plus cinema and social groups.

Accommodation

Previous trainees have rented houses within easy reach of the practice or commuted from Manchester or Blackburn.  Assistance will be available to find a suitable flat or house locally if needed.
